Exercise Instructor Intern, Wellness Department | Foxdale Village, State College, PA
This position is part of the Friends Services Alliance (FSA) Internship program and will be held at Foxdale Village in State College, PA.
Overview:
Nestled in the heart of Happy Valley, Foxdale Village is a Life Plan Community guided by Quaker values located close to the culture and entertainment of State College and Penn State University. Foxdale Village began in 1985 as the dream of some members of the State College Friends Meeting. Our community is modeled after other Quaker-inspired communities in southeast Pennsylvania. After much planning and guidance from these communities, construction began in 1987 and was completed in 1990.
Our beautifully landscaped campus includes 148 cottage homes and 57 apartments for residential living and healthcare available onsite in both Darlington House, our Personal Care center and in Anthony House, our Skilled Nursing Area.
Position Summary:
This internship would be best suited for an undergraduate student in Kinesiology. The intern will work with the Wellness Director and Wellness Team Members as an Exercise Instructor Intern. This intern will shadow, assist and lead programs for residents that promote health and wellness for residents using the wellness center, in personal care and in skilled care. This position will include weekdays and weekends.
The Exercise Instructor Intern will both learn and participate in tasks that include:
- Providing instruction on the proper use of equipment
- Shadow and learn personal training and group exercise classes on land and in the pool
- Supervise activities, while stressing safety and well-being
- Assist with promoting health and wellness activities; communication of program changes; room changes; and related
- Lead a variety of exercises classes for residents in any of the levels of care (independent living, assisted living, and skilled care) as assigned by supervisor
- Clean and maintain exercise equipment
- Follow a biomechanically correct exercise program designed for the residents of Foxdale Village
- Lead or assist with specialized swim classes for health care residents; participate in the supervision of all swimmers in the pool during pool hours
- Complete chemical checks to ensure health water for swimming per CDC guidelines
- Complete pool cleaning tasks as directed/as needed
- Keep records such as attendance, safety checks, and related
- Clean surfaces of all exercise machines in the wellness center, personal care and skilled care according to established guidelines and schedule; follow all applicable infection control Maintain cleaning levels per any infection outbreak protocol
- Review & update materials related to standard operating procedures
- Assist our residents in personal care home to and from wellness programs
- Learn software that tracks residents’ utilization of wellness programs
Additionally, the intern may have the opportunity to shadow various roles across departments at Foxdale Village. This part of the internship will be shaped by the educational interests and unique skills of the intern.

Due to our high occupancy, Foxdale would be most comfortable with an intern who would have off campus housing available in the State College area. Meals will be provided in Dining Services areas free of cost to the intern during internship hours.

As part of an initiative seeking to identify and develop the next generation of leaders, FSA has partnered with Friends Foundation for the Aging to create an internship program for students at who wish to learn about working in the field of aging services. Accepted students experience organizational life within an FSA member organization for two months during the summer. Each intern will have an onsite preceptor to ensure their success. That host will have experience in the field which will give the opportunity for the student to learn directly from a mentor. Interns have worked in several different departments, including Administration, Human Resources, Social Work and Dining Services.
Interns must receive academic credit for their experience and be supported by a faculty member of their educational institution in establishing academic goals for the project. Each intern will be supervised by an experienced onsite manager who will assist with learning goals.
Interns are provided:
- Preceptor/Host Onsite
- Possibility of a monthly stipend (2 months). Dates are flexible and arranged with the host site.
- Reimbursement for travel expenses incurred for the initial trip to and the return trip from the host site.
