Video Reflection Questions: The Many Hats of a Board Member
The Many Hats of a Board Member
- Why does it matter which hat a board member is wearing and to whom they are accountable in their role?
To avoid confusion as to whether they are representing the organization, themselves or someone (something) else.
- In the eyes of others, board members are always wearing their board hat (or representing the board). How does that impact their behavior?
The board member must be careful as they are accountable to the mission of the organization. They should be aware that people may assume they are speaking from the position of board member, even if they believe they are speaking their personal opinions.
- If a board member volunteered to "staff" a table at your organization's annual fundraiser, to whom are they accountable?
They would report to whomever is overseeing the event.
- How important is it to maintain perspective on how others see you?
Very. You need to be sure you are always wearing the appropriate hat!
